Visit Japan Web QR code: how to register, step by step

Visit Japan Web is the free online service of Japan's Digital Agency for immigration and customs procedures. Details entered before the flight produce a QR code that is scanned at the airport, replacing the paper disembarkation card and customs declaration. Registration is optional, takes around 20 minutes and is done on the official portal at vjw.digital.go.jp.

What to prepare

  • Your passport. An IC passport can be scanned with a smartphone camera instead of typing the details.
  • The arrival date, airline and flight number of the flight that lands in Japan. With a connection, this is the last flight.
  • The name, address and phone number of your first accommodation.
  • An email address you can access while traveling.
  • The passport details of family members traveling with you, who can be added to the same account.

How to register, step by step

  1. Create an accountOn the official portal, choose your language, enter an email address and a password, then confirm with the code sent by email.
  2. Register your detailsAdd your passport information by scanning the passport or typing it in. Family members traveling with you can be added as accompanying persons.
  3. Register the tripEnter the arrival date, airline, flight number and the address where you will stay first.
  4. Complete the immigration sectionAnswer the disembarkation card questions: purpose and length of stay, then the three declarations on past deportation, criminal record and prohibited items.
  5. Complete the customs sectionDeclare goods above the duty-free allowance and any cash or securities worth more than ¥1,000,000.
  6. Display the codeOnce both sections show as completed, open the code from the trip screen and save a screenshot in case the airport network is weak.

Using the Visit Japan Web QR code at the airport

At immigration, follow the signs for the lanes and kiosks that accept the code. The kiosk reads the code and your passport, records fingerprints and a photo, and an officer completes the check. At customs, the same code is scanned at the electronic gates or shown to an officer.

Depending on the airport and the date of registration, the screen shows one combined code or separate codes for immigration and customs. Keep at hand the passport used for registration: the code is linked to it, and a different passport will not match.

Is there a Visit Japan Web app?

No official Visit Japan Web app exists. The service runs in any recent mobile or desktop browser, and the portal can be added to a phone's home screen for quick access.

Applications in the App Store or Google Play that use a similar name are not run by the Japanese government, and the Digital Agency has warned travelers about them. Searches for a “Visit Japan Web app” often lead to these unofficial products, so the safest route is to type the official address directly into the browser.

When to fill it in

Registration can be done as soon as the flight is booked, and details can be edited until departure. Completing it a few days before the flight leaves time to fix mistakes. At the latest, finish it before boarding: airport Wi-Fi and roaming can be unreliable on arrival.

Tax-free shopping from 1 November 2026

Under the new refund system, shops charge the full price including consumption tax. At departure, the goods are presented to customs, which confirms the export electronically, and the tax is then refunded by the shop or its refund operator. Purchases must leave Japan within 90 days, and every item has to be presented. The service also offers a tax-free code that can be shown in participating shops to share passport details quickly. Details are in the customs and tax-free guide.

Help with the form

Most travelers complete the registration alone in about 20 minutes. Travelers who prefer to delegate can use an optional assistance service run by a private company: the information is checked and entered on their behalf for €69 per traveler, and the Visit Japan Web QR code generated by the official system is forwarded by email before departure.

Prefer to hand over Visit Japan Web?

Immigration and customs: the assistance service checks your information, completes Visit Japan Web on your behalf and forwards the QR codes generated by the official system by email before departure, for a single price of €69.
